Turn Intention Into Action

Starting a fitness routine after 50 can feel daunting — especially if you’ve had a long break, dealt with injuries, or never really built a consistent habit before. But here’s what I’ve seen time and again working with clients in their 50s, 60s, and 70s: it’s never too late, and the body adapts faster than most people expect.

The biggest mistake people make when starting later in life is trying to do too much, too soon. They jump into a five-day-a-week program, get sore, get discouraged, and quit within two weeks. The key is building sustainable momentum — starting where you are and progressing from there.

Here’s a simple framework for getting started:

Week 1–2: Move every day. Don’t worry about intensity. Walk 20–30 minutes daily, do some gentle mobility work, and focus on building the habit of showing up. Consistency beats intensity at this stage.

Week 3–4: Add two strength sessions per week. Bodyweight movements are perfect here — squats, hinges, push-ups, rows. Use a range of motion that feels comfortable and controlled. The goal is to teach your body the movement patterns, not to exhaust yourself.

Month 2 and beyond: Increase resistance progressively. Start adding light weights or bands to your movements. Aim for three strength sessions per week and continue your daily walks. By this point, most people feel notably more energetic, sleep better, and notice real improvements in mobility and strength.

A few things to keep in mind as you get started: prioritize form over load, listen to your body (soreness is normal, pain is not), and don’t skip rest days — recovery is where the adaptation actually happens.
